"I don't know if there was surprise with president Trump's free trade proclamation but they certainly listened to it and we had lengthy discussions about that", Trump's economic advisor Larry Kudlow said.

Mr Trump's salvo capped a rollecoaster two days of controversies that began with his suggestion Russian Federation be readmitted to the G7, then what a French official described as a "rant" full of "recriminations" against U.S. trading partners, followed by a denial of any tensions with leaders at the summit and his description of their relationship as a "10".

After a failure to get Trump to budge on the tariffs he placed against America's G7 allies, Justin Trudeau held a press conference in which he vowed retaliatory action.

The two-day 44th G7 summit ended on Sunday.

Trump has repeatedly raked up the issue of India imposing high import duty on the iconic Harley-Davidson motorcycles and threatened to increase the import tariff on "thousands and thousands" of Indian motorcycles to the US.

Kudlow alleged that the Canadian Prime Minister used the G-7 summit for his domestic political consumption. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who also attended the summit, told German public television that she found Trump's tweet disavowing the G-7 statement "sobering" and "a little depressing".

Russian Federation was expelled from what was then called the G8 in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. "President Trump had no alternative, in my opinion".

Navarro, the Trump trade adviser, said his harsh assessment of what "bad faith" Trudeau did with "that stunt press conference" on Saturday "comes right from Air Force One".

Trudeau, at a news conference at the conclusion of the G-7 summit, said that Canadians are polite, reasonable, but will not be pushed around.

"They should have said to him, 'God speed, you are negotiating with the insane nuclear tyrant in North Korea, and we are behind you, '" Kudlow said.

Now the US, Canada and Mexico are renegotiating the NAFTA agreement which Trump had earlier deemed to be unfair for the US.

Mr. Trump's tweets taking aim at the leader of a country that has always been a U.S. ally came after the President left the G7 summit in Canada to travel to Singapore ahead of a planned diplomatic meeting with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un, CNN reported.

"The G20 helpfully has more countries that have a stake in the economy of the world, including the G7", he told Reuters.

He says Russia's return as a member of the Group of Seven would be "an asset".

"Kim must not see American weakness", he said.
