Women Won Big In Tuesday's Primary Elections

Republican National Committee officials highlighted news reports that suggested the anti-Trump surge that Democrats are banking on this fall never came to fruition in the primaries.

In the midwestern state of Montana, one of the least populated states in the country, Republicans hope to ride on a wave of strong support for Trump to unseat the incumbent Democratic senator Jon Tester. But that seemed to be more of a typical presidential boast than a realistic analysis of the California results.

With a Republican now competing in the most important statewide election, the GOP believes it can turn out its vote in November and protect vulnerable members of Congress in districts that voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Voters in seven other states went to the polls as well. Neither party immediately appeared to suffer major setbacks.

FOX NEWS HOST: It allows the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, to advance. Even Fake News CNN said the Trump impact was really big, much bigger than they ever thought possible.

"The Democrats just spent $10 million trying to shut us out and they didn't shut us out", he told reporters.

"Get the vote out in California today for Rep. Kevin McCarthy and all of the great GOP candidates for Congress. Keep our country out of the hands of High Tax, High Crime Nancy Pelosi", Trump said, referring to the 78-year-old House Democratic minority leader.

Ivey, who stepped into the governor post after the resignation of Robert Bentley past year, will seek a full term in November.

In California's Senate race, Democrat incumbent Dianne Feinstein easily made it through to November's election. It was still unclear whether a Republican would earn enough votes to oppose her on California's November ballot.

Californian voters took to the polls on Tuesday, June 5 for one of the most closely watched primaries leading up to the 2018 midterm elections.

"That election was a real slap in the face to a lot of us", Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat running for a House seat in New Jersey now held by a Republican, told Bloomberg. The favorite of Washington Democrats will take on GOP Assemblyman Jay Webber in one of several New Jersey races Democrats view as possible pickups.

Representative Martha Roby of Alabama withdrew her endorsement of Trump weeks before the election, following the Access Hollywood Tape. The candidate receiving the fewest votes after the first round of counting is eliminated and his or her votes are redistributed to the voter's second preference. In South Dakota, Congresswoman Kristi Noem won the Republican gubernatorial primary, making her likely to become South Dakota's first female governor.

Other women candidates who won Tuesday night include Iowa Democrats Cindy Axne and Abby Finkenauer. In New Mexico's first Congressional district, Democrats nominated Deb Haaland to replace Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

"Being at war with Donald Trump isn't gonna make anybody's life better", he said.

Those candidates included four New Jersey moderates who had faced more liberal challengers.

Republican businessman Bob Hugin claimed the Republican nomination to face Menendez this fall. Darrell Issa is retiring; so is Ed Royce.

National Democrats spent more than $7 million trying to curb and fix the damage inflicted by Democrats attacking each other in districts opened by retiring Republican Reps. Even though Republican Diane Harkey was the top finisher, the next three finishers on the list are all Democrats, with Mike Levin finishing in second.

Republicans are more enthusiastic than Democrats and independents about voting this November, but all Americans are more eager to vote than they were in the last mid-term elections. The second spot remained up for grabs. While Party Republicans generally back the president's positions on immigration and a border wall, those aren't the issues most on their mind. But interest among Party Republicans-those who say they support the party more than they support the president-lags behind.
