President Trump commutes sentence of Alice Johnson

Alice Marie Johnson broke down in tears after she was released from federal prison on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump commuted her life sentence on Wednesday. She was convicted in 1996 on eight counts related to a cocaine trafficking ring in Memphis.

"Trump stumbled into a good thing with this Alice Johnson [commutation]. Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates", the White House said in a statement announcing the commutation of her sentence. She went on to say that her heart "is so full of gratitude for the handsome inside and out Kim Khardashian West who made a decision to advocate for and essentially save the life of my mother, someone she had never heard of or met!" Kardashian West then tweeted, "The phone call I just had with Alice will forever be one of my best memories".

Notably, the decision came after a meeting with Kim Kardashian, who has always been an advocate for the incarcerated 63-year-old. Last month, Trump posthumously pardoned the boxer Jack Johnson after the actor Sylvester Stallone raised his case with the President.

Barnett, one of Johnson's attorneys, said in a statement, "Justice has been served today, and it's long overdue".

Trump has signaled he's prepared to pardon many more prisoners he believes have been treated unfairly.

West allegedly told Owens that she was attractive and smart and could be the first female president of the United States.

Her husband had said in an appearance on TMZ: "When you hear about slavery for 400 years. for 400 years?"

Kardashian West reacted to the news by thanking Trump, the president's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, and "everyone who has showed compassion & contributed countless hours to this important moment for Ms. Alice Marie Johnson".

DON'T FORGET: Though Trump has apparently intervened on Alice Johnson's behalf, his DOJ has taken steps to ensure more people like her will be imprisoned on drug charges.

Obama did not honor her plea, but now Trump has. Trump adhered to her wishes with a clemency grant for Johnson after their conversation where she told Mic that he "really spent the time to listen to our case that we were making for Alice".

Cameras captured Johnson's reunion with family members after a van transported her outside the prison.

Johnson learned the news of her clemency on Wednesday, during an emotional conference call with Kardashian West and her legal team.

The official said the Justice Department denied her petition because prosecutors maintain Johnson was involved in a drug cartel that was connected to violence and crime.
