The Daily Express says that the teenager has completed his medical and agreed personal terms, and an official announcement will be made in the next 48 hours with United "ready to pay nearly £20m" for his services.

Chelsea's Willian, who is on global duty with Fred ahead of the World Cup and is another to have worked under Mourinho, added of his Brazil team-mate: "He has a lot of quality, he can improve a lot".

Despite their highest league finish since Alex Ferguson retired, Mourinho was heavily criticised for adopting cautious tactics in several big games as United were often made to look ponderous in comparison to stylish City's commitment to attack.

Willian is quoted as saying by Metro: "He is very happy to come to the Premier League to play".

Brazilian midfielder Fred will need time to adapt to the demands of English football but has all the attributes to succeed at Manchester United, former World Player of the Year Rivaldo has said.

Fred - whose arrival comes after Michael Carrick's retirement and amid uncertainty surrounding Marouane Fellaini's future - will become United's first summer signing.

Fred made his global debut for Brazil in 2014 under Dunga and was called up for the 2015 Copa America following an injury to defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo. However, FIFA extended the punishment to a worldwide ban in 2016 which ruled him out for four months.

As they prepare for the World Cup in order to look sharp on the pitch, the Brazil players are also aiming to look sharp off it too.

Mourinho's task will now be to harness Fred's passing ability, while also finally getting the best out of Pogba in his third season since £89 million move from Juventus.

"If I was a club manager, I would be looking to sign him".
