"I thought I've got to cut down on the errors, and I've just got to come out here and fight".

"I was different to Venus: she was thin and tall and attractive, and I am strong and muscular - and handsome, but, you know, it was just totally different".

"I feel like a warrior wearing it, a queen from Wakanda [a reference to the Black Panther movie] maybe", she said.

Serena Williams is officially back!

The US tennis ace, 36, had Alexis Olympia Ohanian emergency caesarean last September and needed surgery for blood clots on her lungs.

She did not play any clay-court tournaments before arriving in Roland Garros, preferring to focus on improving her fitness and sharpening her game outside of competition at her coach Patrick Mouratoglou's academy near Nice, France.

Her next opponent may well be a familiar face, with Williams hoping to come through a testing third-round match with Germany's Julia Goerges later on Saturday.

"Serena will play the French Open to win it", he said.

No one ever said coming back to tennis after an extended absence would be easy for Serena Williams. I always wanted to be a superhero, and it's kind of my way of being a superhero.

While trying to surpass Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam titles might be one of the reasons she pushed herself to get back on court despite all her complications in childbirth, she also wants to see if she recover her pre-pregnancy form. "I want to be able to one day tell my daughter that I tried my best.Want her to be proud of me".

Asked how it would feel to return to a main show court for her third-round match, she replied: "Do you know the schedule?"

I had a lot of problems with those - I don't know how many I have had in the past 12 months.

"I have definitely always had that will to win".

And she got off to a fine start too as she won the first set tie-break against Pliskova 7-6.

23-time Grand Slam victor Serena Williams is hoping to go beyond the level of her pre-pregnancy days after reaching the third round of the French Open Thursday.

Barty led by a set and a break before falling 3-6 6-3 6-4 to the returning grand slam colossus.
