Serena Williams makes fashion statement in Grand Slam return

Serena Williams made a winning return to Grand Slam tennis which was as memorable as her body-hugging black catsuit when she reached the Roland Garros second round on Tuesday. That she is now ranked 451 in the WTA rankings is an irrelevance - more pertinent is that she finished 2017 ranked 22, having played only two events all year.

Krystina Pliskova, who shared the Wimbledon winners' stage with Serena back in 2010 - the Czech was junior champion as Serena won the real thing that year, played her part across the net on center court, but there was only one star.

Williams owns 23 Grand Slam singles titles. "I don't know how many aces I saw during the match".

Playing her first Major since the birth of daughter Alexis Olympia on September 1, she is determined to show that the competitive fire still burns bright. For the special occasion, she chose a unique outfit: a full length black bodysuit with a pink stripe. Williams had her hands full with her first opponent, Kristyna Pliskova. Barty, considered in doubt after the injury that forced here to retire in Strasbourg, lived up to her first-time seeding at Roland Garros with a thumping 6-3 6-1 victory over Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva in 64 minutes. She won 80% of her first serve points. She added: "Two years is a long time but I've trained hard on this surface".

After beating Serena Williams in the 2016 final, Muguruza's title defense was ended in the fourth round past year.

Canadian teen Denis Shapovalov's first Grand Slam match as a seeded player went about as smoothly as could be - a straight-set victory at the French Open.

Third-seeded Marin Cilic and James Duckworth played for a little more than one hour on Court Philippe Chatrier before they were sent back to the locker room by tournament officials.

French Open organisers stick rigidly to the WTA rankings, so would not seed Serena.
