HTC confirms plans to launch 'Exodus' blockchain phone

HTC Vive founder Phil Chen will be spearheading the blockchain initiative.

Unlike ordinary smartphones, whose main features might be a high-resolution display, facial recognition or artificial intelligence, the main features of the HTC Exodus are quite cutting edge: decentralized apps (DApps), cryptocurrency wallets for storing Bitcoin, Lightning Networks, Ethereum and Dfinity. Naturally, users will also be able to purchase the phone itself using cryptocurrency.

HTC, however, isn't the first to come out with a Blockchain-powered phone.

At a blockchain conference today, HTC announced a new concept Android phone that is optimized for the blockchain. For more information about the Exodus, you can register/reserve an one with your name and email at the landing page for the phone. The phone will be compatible with multiple protocols and will also support interoperability.

The Exodus has no specifications, though it does include some highly-marketable and probably fictitious design schematics that make it abundantly clear this is a very technical product. Honestly, I would find it extremely paradoxical if HTC didn't accept cryptocurrency for its blockchain-powered phone. Moreover, it is expected that some more partnerships will be established later in order to support the entire blockchain ecosystem.

Other Chinese phone manufacturers have announced the development of similar blockchain powered devices soon to be available including Sugar which claims to be developing a phone that can mine Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The unique selling point of a blockchain smartphone is that it supposedly offers better security and an improved user experience by integrating cold wallet storage right into the device, and enabling direct trading of the native cryptocurrency with peers without mining fees.

Though the price of the new devices is still unknown, it has been announced that the company is going to start distributing the device by the end of the year.
