Needless to say, the film industry was somewhat put on edge by the promise of a new violent feature.

One viewer was left shocked by the scene where Dillon mutilates children. However, he was once again welcomed as "The House That Jack Built" was screened outside of the competition this year.

Von Trier was making his first appearance on the Croisette since being declared "persona not grata" by the festival over a 2011 press conference in which he joked about sympathising with the Nazis. "More than 100 people have walked out of Lars von Trier's The House That Jack Built, which depicts the mutilation of women and children". His first victim is Uma Thurman's stranded road traveler (credited as "Lady 1"), an albeit annoying individual who insists that Jack take her to a nearby blacksmiths to weld back together the jack needed to fix her vehicle.

The story follows Jack, played by Dillon, a serial killer who views his murders as elaborate works of art.

As well as commenting on his own career and reputation, von Trier is having a sly jab at Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, and all those other films which present serial killers as cultured masterminds.

Nevertheless Lars still has his fans, with a six-minute standing ovation taking place during the end credits. That being said, as someone who isn't a huge Lars on Trier fan, I gotta admit I'm pretty eager to see how this one is going to turn out.

Trailers for the film were also released following its debut at Cannes. "Torturous. Pathetic", wrote one attendee on Twitter, while entertainment reporter Roger Friedman described it as a "vile movie" that "should not have been made".

We experience the story from Jack's point of view, while he postulates each murder is an artwork in itself.

The House That Jack Built also stars Sofie Gråbøl, Johannes Kuhnke, Marijana Jankovic, Osy Ikhile, Jerker Fahlström, Jeremy Davies, and David Bailie.
